Costa Rica has some great cycling routes available and none more beautiful than the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Areas such a Heredia, Alejuela and Cartago offer some great climbs, descents and sweeping views of the valley.
Below are some my favorite rides in Costa Rica:
Poas Volcano: This is a great ride that you can start from San Jose, Alejuela or Heredia and climbs around 5000ft. The climb is steady and there are some points that are heavy climbs but fine for an intermediate rider. On the way up you will pass Cafe's where you can taste some great Costa Rican Coffee or try some Costa Rican cuisine. It's a ride of around 4-5 hrs however well worth the effort as the views of the Central Valley are breattaking as you can see above.
Orosi Valley: This is one of the most picturesque rides I have ever done in Costa Rica, it starts cycling some of the backroads through the suburbs of San Jose with a climb before reaching Cartago. Cartago is a quaint town that is the religious center of Costa Rica and a great location to stop for coffee right in front of the Church. From here you head downhill past Lankaster Gardens and into Paraiso, then a steep descent to the Cachi Lake. From here you head around the Lake, stopping for lunch and coffee if you want, before a very steep uphill to Paraiso again. You can organise transport to bring you back or cycle back for a more grueling ride.
